Teaching

Hello all  budding singers.

A large part my varied career is sharing my passion with others through vocal teaching. I have extensive experience as a singing teacher and have developed my style over a number of years through both self-reflection and as a result of my own performing development with eminent practitioners including Anita Wardell, Claire Martin, Liane Carroll, Pete Churchill and Ian Shaw. My lifelong love of singing and its place in a wide variety of musical styles enthuses and inspires my students. I encourage my students to take risks, to be bold and to embrace failure as a means of improving. Developing their personal identity as a singer and performing in front of others is central to this, and as a result my students have enjoyed success in public examinations (Trinity Rock & Pop and Rockschool), recording sessions and higher education and professional auditions. In order to continue my learning and refine my practice, I have recently undertaken further study in the Estill Model of voice training and Neuro Linguistic Programming and Personal Coaching, with a view to incorporating vocal and cognitive concepts from these into my teaching.

I am based in Chiswick near Turnham Green Tube..

Lessons are £40 per hour

“Jo has been my singing teacher and voice coach for two years. She has coached me in the studio on every single track on my demo and thanks to her I also got in to Vocal Tech Music College this year!Through her amazing exercises and support she has given me confidence in performing, and a stronger, more versatile voice. She always tries out new ways of improving my voice so the lessons never get boring. She pushes me in a gentle way and she constantly keeps me on my toes.

I now feel well prepared for my music studies and a successful career! Whatever level you are at with your singing I can thoroughly recommend her as a teacher/singing coach.”

“I started my lessons when i was 11, and have now been one of Jo’s student for just over a year now and my skills have strongly developed.

When I came to her I had never had any singing tuition before, and only sang the one genre of music, Musical theatre. Jo took on board what I liked, and the styles of music I am good at and went from that. She taught me theory, performance, scat, how to count beats, new skills, warm ups to do and how the voice works, and much more.

Although she is most knowledgeable in Jazz , she was able to help me and teach several others, such as Classical, Musical Theatre, Pop , etc. She is a very patient and kind teacher, that pushes you to do better, but knows your limitations. Because of her background not only in jazz but in Musical Theatre, when I auditioned to get into a Performing Arts school she was able to help me pick a song that would show my abilities and help and improve the piece each lesson. Because of her help and encouragement I am now a full-time student at the school I applied to.

Each lesson we do something different, and constantly work on new songs. I have a folder of several songs Jo has taught me, and many experiences that she has arranged for me out of class. some of those experiences included performing at a open mic with a live jazz band, and watching her perform at many different venues. I always look forward to class because i always learn new things, and pushes me to improve, but always takes into account what I enjoy, and what I like to sing.”
